about

This track was recorded in the Butterfly Garden at the Banff Centre on a chilly fall day in October. The flowers, bushes and plants in the garden had dried into husks, and provided lovely crackling and shimmering sounds for recording. The wind sounds in this recording include the trees that surround the Butterfly Garden. Thee continuous hum that is heard comes from the power systems at the Banff Centre -- a constant reminder of the intersection and boundaries between the natural environment and the presence of humans. To make this recording, I installed a vibration microphone and a H4N Zoom recorder beside a dried floral plant. As I walked along the path in the garden I encountered a beautiful mule deer lying at the edge of the garden just outside of the garden gate.
